Tuesday – May 5, 2009 – Cinco de Mayo
Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

As far as excuses to get drunk on a weeknight go, Cinco de Mayo is a pretty good one. But, then again, Lehigh Valley residents have never really needed much of an excuse go and get hammered on Corona’s. I believe Cinco de Mayo is actually a legitimate excuse to call in sick on May 6 at most LV workplaces.

Today I’ve got a couple of ideas for you to make the most of this almost definitely made-up holiday. At the Don Pablo’s in Easton, DJ Cap Cee will be spinning all the hits along side $2.99 and $5 margarita specials.

At the Bethlehem Brewworks, it’s Tres Amigos Tuesday featuring three awesome specials. 3 Soft Shell Tacos for $3, 3 Churros for $3, or a Brewworks Margarita for $3. Sounds like a great deal to me. Why not try washing down those tacos with the Brewworks new Cinco de Mayo inspired beer, Loco Lime? Think Miller Chill or Bud Light Lime but not disgusting, or as the Brewworks website puts it “a crisp refreshing, lime infused pale lager.”

Cinco de Mayo is your chance to turn Tuesday into Friday, so head on out to your local bar and throw back a couple of shots of tequila. It’s what Mexican General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín would’ve wanted.

Saturday – May 2, 2009 – West Allentown Pub Crawl Tonight!
Saturday, May 2nd, 2009

If you’ve been following this blog for any length of time you probably know that I’ve been eagerly awaiting the pub crawl through West Allentown tonight. I had so much fun after the St Patrick’s Day pub crawl this past March that I have been looking forward to this ever since. If you weren’t able to make it to the first one or didn’t hear about it until after the fact do not miss tonight’s pub crawl. Registration is $15 which gets you two beers and benefits the SPD festivities in Allentown. Swing by any of the participating bars before 6PM to register.

And speaking of the participating bars, here they are…

So far the weather is holding out, but I’m seeing clouds in the sky right now. But according to the WFMZ Hourly Forecast it looks like we are in the clear. Start making some calls, send some texts, and round up your friends for the biggest event going on this weekend.

West Allentown Pub Crawl this Saturday
Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

Hey everyone, I hope you’ve all fully recovered from the weekend. Let’s just say Sunday morning was a little rough for me. Don’t let anyone tell you that staying out late for Glow 2 and walking 3 miles for the National MS Society at 9AM the next morning is a good idea…because it’s not.

Anyway, just wanted to give everyone a quick reminder about the upcoming pub crawl through West Allentown this Saturday. The quick deatils are…Saturday, May 2…6:30PM…starting at Callaghan’s Ale House…sames bars as last time (minus the Liberty Street Tavern)…two free beers with $15 registration fee. If you missed the first pub crawl this is your chance, don’t miss out again. If you haven’t already, mark your calendars now. I’ll be back to talk about this again later in the week.

OMG! Details announced about a second West Allentown Pub Crawl!
Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

Forgive my overreaction, but this is big news. Last month’s St. Patrick’s Day Pub Crawl through West Allentown was a huge success and a great time for everyone who participated. And apparently, it was a big enough success that a second pub crawl is being organized. Scheduled around Cinco De Mayo, the pub crawl is set to take place on May 2nd starting at 6:30PM. All of your favorite West Allentown bars are back again this time around. But this time instead of one free beer, the $15 registration fee gets you two free beers.

Here’s a list of the participating bars…

Do yourself a favor. Put this on your calendar right now. Done? Good. I’ll keep you posted about this as we get closer to May.

Friday – April 3, 2009 – First Friday
Friday, April 3rd, 2009

On the First Friday of every month, Bethlehem’s Southside becomes a hotspot for those interested in checking out local artists and local restaurants. The shops and restaurants on the Southside’s walkable streets open their doors, offering special menus, drink prices, as well as other bargains for the night.

Looper’s Grille and Bar, located at 313 E. 3rd St, serves up a mean martini and some of the best food in town. Looper’s tends to draw a pretty big crowd, so the earlier you get there, the better. It’s impossible to consider yourself a fan of the martini if you’ve never been to Looper’s. Their martini list has well over 100 drinks to choose from. But what if you don’t know what kind of martini you want? Their excellent wait staff can pick you the perfect martini by asking you three questions. Seriously. Give it a shot. Oh, and here’s another tip….BRING YOUR ID! You will get carded and without ID, don’t expect to stay long at Looper’s.

Another option to consider while on the Southside is the Element Lounge on Adams St. Tonight they are offering $2 Coors Light, $4 Red Bull & vodka, and $4 Doubles. I honestly cannot give a recommendation for or against this place. I’ve never been there and I’ve only heard mixed reviews from friends. Anyone been there before?

Looking to hit the dance floor? DJ Cap Cee will be spinning tonight at 40 Below.

Don’t let the rain keep you in tonight, according to WFMZ’s Matt Broderick the rain should roll out of here around 6PM (just ignore the chance that it might come back around 9PM). First Friday is always a good time, do yourself a favor and check it out.

Seen – March 21, 2009 – Pub Crawl
Sunday, March 22nd, 2009

Allentown, I didn’t know you had it in you. Last night probably close to three hundred people turned out to 8 different bars in Allentown’s West End to celebrate St Patrick’s Day one last time. It was really cool to see so many different people all out having a great time in an area off the beaten path. Pub crawls like this need to happen much more often.

Saturday – March 21, 2009 – West Allentown Pub Crawl
Saturday, March 21st, 2009

LV Scene commenter Gwendolyn Houndstooth brought to my attention a pub crawl that’s happening today in Allentown’s West End. After doing some further investigation it sounds like a pretty good time. The pub crawl starts at 6:30 tonight and costs $15. The $15 gets you a free beer, a t-shirt, and helps offset costs of the Allentown St Patrick’s Day Parade. So, it’s practically a donation to charity…feel free to deduct it as a charitable donation from your income taxes next year. The only catch is you have to register at any one of the bars before 6PM tonight, hope that doesn’t make this too short notice for anyone. More information about the pub crawl here. Here’s a list of the pubs that are participating…

Me and my crew will be meeting at Callaghan’s Ale House around 6:30 to kick this thing off, but I think you can start at any of the bars. If you didn’t get the chance to celebrate SPD already this year, this could be your final opportunity…don’t let it pass you by.

Oh, Allentown Brewworks… I want to love you; I really do. You’re beautiful, your beer tastes great, and it just feels right. But why can’t you draw a crowd? I mean, the 40-50 people that were there last night all had a good time, but on SPD that’s just not enough. Maybe that’s not what you’re about though. Maybe you are calling out to the people who just want to get a couple of drinks and catch up with friends in a laid back atmosphere. Which is totally cool. Maybe we just want different things.

March 17, 2009 – St Patrick's Day!
Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

Ok, so the day we’ve all been waiting for is finally here…St Patrick’s Day is upon us. Now, pretty much every restaurant and bar in the Lehigh Valley is doing something to celebrate SPD so the question is: where can you make the most of your night? Bethlehem’s Southside bars would probably be a good choice for anyone looking for a big crowd. Tally Ho, MacGrady’s, and Starter’s will all be packed, but since we went there on Friday night, let’s do something different tonight.

The Braveheart Highland Pub in Hellertown is a Scottish establishment, but that doesn’t mean they can’t get in on all the hot Irish action tonight. Opening at 4:30 today, a live DJ will be playing authentic Irish music to go along with $2 green colored domestic beers and $5 Irish car bombs. If you’re tired of smoky college bars and want to try something different, this is the place for you.

The Allentown Brewworks on Hamilton St. in Downtown Allentown will be featuring Irish Step Dancing throughout the evening as well as DJ Synystr from 8-12 tonight and$2 Green PigPen Pilsners. In my personal experience, the crowd has always been a bit thin at the Allentown Brewworks but they have great beer, the location is really cool, and it’s SPD…every bar is going to have a good crowd tonight.

Tueday nights at PJ Whelihan’s in West Allentown always draws a big crowd. Their fantastic wings are half-price and have been described by some as “meat candy”. $3 drafts of Guinness, Harp Lager, and Smithwicks Ale and karaoke starting at 9PM only help sweeten the deal. For St Patrick’s day, you can expect all of the above plus giveaways and Irish food.

Anyone know of anything else fun that’s going on tonight? It’s going to be a tough decision, but I’m most likely going to end up at either the Brewworks or Braveheart tonight. Regardless of where you go tonight, keep in mind, this day only comes once a year…so enjoy it!

Dear Jim Thorpe,

I don’t know what kind of man you were, if you liked to party, or even if you liked to have a good time. But today I think you would’ve been proud of the town that now bears your name. Because of today Jim, I’ve now completely changed my opinion on parades. See, parades as a rule suck and going to one is pretty much a death sentence. But the fact is on a Sunday afternoon in early March what else is even going on? So thanks for kicking off my spring…I’ll see you next year.
