Saturday – March 20, 2010 – St. Patrick’s Day West End Pub Crawl

OMG, you guys! St. Patrick’s Day is almost here come and gone! I don’t know if it’s just me, but has every day this past year that wasn’t St. Patrick’s Day been a bit underwhelming? SPD is truly our nation’s greatest holiday.

And after a year of waiting, the St. Patrick’s Day West End pub crawl is finally here too! Last year’s West End pub crawl was easily the best night out I’ve had all year. I cannot recommend this pub crawl enough!

As you can see from the picture on the right, Allentown’s West End alliance has a bunch of cool events coming up. I suggest you take a look at their Facebook fan page for more information.

But these are just some of the upcoming events that will be going on in the Lehigh Valley. Because if there is one thing we know how to do right in the LV, it’s use a holiday as an excuse to get sloppy drunk. Stay tuned to LV Scene for more information about all the St. Patrick’s Day festivities throughout our area.

Saturday – January 9, 2010 – Snuggie Bar Crawl??

According to sources at the Morning Call there will be a Snuggie themed bar crawl through Allentown’s West End tonight at 6PM. The MCall’s Twitter page says that the crawl will be starting tonight from Jack Callaghan’s Ale House on Tilghman St. I’ve been unable to find out any more details other than that and calls to Callaghan’s have gone unanswered. I’ll keep on it and will update this post if I’m able to find anything else out.

After doing some research, aka Googling, I’ve found out that these things are getting pretty popular in some of the major cities across the country. Which makes Allentown the latest in a long line of cities who have joined the Snuggie Cult. The picture on the right was taken at pub crawl in Chicago.

Is this pub crawl going to get me to take back all the negative things I’ve said about Snuggies? No, definitely not. The Snuggie is still one of the stupidest inventions of all time. But I will admit those infomercials were right. The Snuggie is not only useful for keeping your arms warm while reading books or using the remote control, but also perfect for holding beer bottles and cocktail glasses while pub crawling through the West End.

OMG! “Never a cover”, reports the Pig Pen’s Facebook page!

According to a Facebook status update, it looks like the PigPen has finally caved in and killed their cover charge. Back when they first opened there was a cover charge every night of the week (LAME) and not too long ago they dropped the cover charge Sunday-Thursday. After that they dropped the cover charge for all women, effectively making every night ladies night at The PigPen (also LAME). But I guess that wasn’t panning out too well either.

Since most major bars in the Lehigh Valley don’t charge cover (oh, and have you heard that the economy is pretty bad these days?), it’s nice to see the PigPen getting with it and losing the cover. From a business perspective I totally understand wanting to charge a cover at a huge place like the PigPen. But throw us regular folk a bone here. This isn’t NYC or Philly..no one wants to pay $8 to get into a bar in the Lehigh Valley.

What are your thoughts about this? Did you see this coming? Should it have happened a long time ago?

OMG! Girl Talk at Lehigh tonight!

“Stop the presses!” is what I’d be yelling if people used presses anymore, I guess “stop the WordPress-es!” is more appropriate. Mash-up DJ extraordinaire Girl Talk is playing a show at Lehigh University tonight. If you’ve never heard Girl Talk before, you need to stop reading this post now, go to Girl Talk’s MySpace page, and check out some of his music. GT is probably one of the most inventive DJ’s out there today and his live shows are insane. I had the oppportunity to catch himin Philly last October at the Starlight Ballroom and had an awesome time. A Girl Talk show isn’t so much a concert as it is a dance party. girltalk djPeople get up on the stage and dance as if it were their own personal dance floor. It’s truly a one of a kind experience. The show is part of Lehigh’s Bonfire celebration for the upcoming Lehigh-Lafayette game this weekend. Now I’m not a Lehigh student, so that’s not exactly my first priority. But any event that brings Girl Talk to the Lehigh Valley is something worth checking out. According to the Lehigh Univeristy Productions page the Bonfire event starts at 8PM at their Goodman Campus and, best of all, the event is “free to all students and the community” . No word on when exactly Girl Talk takes the stage.

Now I know it’s raining out and by the time Girl Talk get’s started it’s probably gonna be pretty cold out but, if you’re not working, you’ve got no excuse not to go to the show tonight. Everyone needs to see Girl Talk at least once in their lives and if you haven’t seen him yet, tonight is the night.

OMG!! LV Scene Author to Host Weekly Trivia Night at The Firehouse!

If you haven’t already guessed what this blog post is about, you might just wanna stop reading because a new trivia night is probably not something you’ll be interested in. But for those of you who have discerned what’s going on, I have a very big announcement for you. I’m excited to announce that starting in the near future, I will be hosting a Trivia night at The Firehouse!

Since opening in September, The Firehouse has been without a trivia night, opting to concentrate on their weekend events/parties. But now that they’ve got weekends under control, they’re going to be expanding their weekly offerings to include some new events…including a weekly trivia night.

Not all the details have been worked out just yet, and that’s where you come in. What would you like to see at this trivia night? Do you want more questions about pop culture? History? Sports? Would you like to see multi-question rounds? Or one question per round? Would you like to include pictures? Audio & video clips?

OMG!! Musikfest starts this Friday!

OMG, you guys! Musikfest! It starts this Friday! Holy cow! The annual music extravaganza takes over Bethlehem this Friday bringing dozens of music acts and thousands of visitors to the Lehigh Valley. Unless you’re new to the Valley, you’re probably already aware of the insanity the festival causes in and around Bethlehem. But, regardless of the madness, Musikfest is not a festival to be missed. I think I probably made it out to Musikfest three or more times last year…though that was mostly because I lived only a couple blocks away on W. Lehigh St. Even though I no longer live ridiculously close to the eye of the storm, I’m still planning on checking out Musikfest several times this year.  I have to, where else am I going to get Aw Shucks Roasted Corn?

OMG!! There's a lot of stuff going on this week!

Ok. Despite the fact that we are in the middle of vacation season, there’s a lot of stuff going on this week. July is traditionally a popular month to go on vacation and as a result bars and restaurants tend to do less events. But several local groups are bucking that trend and making this week one of the most exciting all summer.

As the week goes on I’ll be bringing you more detailed posts about each individual event, but for right now I’m just going to post a quick rundown of the week so you can start thinking ahead.

  • July Lehigh Valley Tweetup @ Spark Offices – LV Scene Twitter’s, do you? If so, come to this month’s Tweetup hosted at the offices of Spark. Don’t know anyone who’s going? No problem, you actually might be better off that way! Go here or here for more details.
  • Associated Mess @ Pitchers – Looking for live, local improv comedy in the LV? Look no further. The Mess is the only group doing it and they’re damn good at it too! The show starts at 8PM and costs $8…sounds like a good deal to me!
  • An Evening with Cap Cee @ Roosevelt’s 21st – Cap Cee. Roosevelt’s. One night only. Enough said.

Friday & Saturday

  • Christmas in July @ Starter’s Riverport - It’s the 2nd annual Christmas in July party at Starter’s Riveport and this year they are going big. More details to come about this exciting event, or just click here.

OMG!! PULSE is this Saturday!

Way back in May, I told you to Mark Your Calendar’s for the biggest party of the summer, PULSE at Starter’s Riverport. Well, did you? If you did, you would know that PULSE is this Saturday!

DJ Cap Cee and his Audio Dynamikz crew have been patiently waiting since their last big party (GLOW 2) and it all pays off this weekend. Cap Cee is pulling out all the stops for this party, including dropping the cover charge. There will be 4 DJ’s playing nothing under 120 BPM’s on dance floors both downstairs and upstairs. OMG!! LV Scene reaches 100 followers on Twitter!

After reading the title of this post you probably either thought one of two things…”who cares?” or “oh, that’s kinda cool”. If you haven’t already, check out the LV Scene Twitter profile here. Wanna know what the scene is like before you go out? On weekends I update it as I’m out and about at the bars.  Check out the LV Scene Twitter for live updates from wherever I am. Throughout the week I keep it updated whenever I put up a new post on the blog.

Oh, and one more thing…have you checked out the blog LV With Love? Ever see something in the news and think, “Seriously? Are you really that stupid?”. If so, LV With Love is the snarky, smart-ass blog you’ve been looking for. It’s also easily one of the best Lehigh Valley blogs on the net, with new content several times a day. LV With Love puts lesser bloggers like myself to shame with the amount of updates they post. I guess you could say I have a “blog crush” on them.

OMG! UPDATE! – Tuesday Night Trivia – Late Night Trivia at The Ho

I just received an email from the manager over at the Tally Ho, where Tuesday night is also trivia night.

He writes,

“I believe we’re the only venue that offers trivia after midnight. We play 2 $50 gift certificate rounds and a $25 consolation round late night. $4 domestic pitchers 10-12. Wing special and $2 well drinks 10-12.”

So if you are you looking for a late night trivia option, check out the Ho!
