Saturday – December 5, 2009 – Anniversary of the Ratification of the 21st Ammendment @ Roosevelt’s 21st
Monday, November 23rd, 2009

It’s hard to believe that a mere 76 years ago it was a crime to throw a back a beer. The 18th Amendment to the Constitution banned “the sale, manufacture, and transportation of alcohol for consumption.” During this time speakeasies, like the Bookstore in Bethlehem, sprung up all over our country, numbering in the ten thousands and allowing alcohol loving people to get their drink on. But, Champion of the Drunks, President Franklin Roosevelt repealed that law with the 21st Amendment.

To celebrate the 76th Anniversary of the Ratification of 21st Amendment, the people at Roosevelt’s 21st are offering $.21 drafts all day! Not sure what drafts that will deal will apply for (I’m guessing whatever is cheapest), but still…a draft for less than a quarter! Keeping things lively will be DJ Dangerous Dan, he’ll be on the turntables from 10PM-2AM.

Friday – November 20, 2009 – DJ Roonie G @ Starter’s Riverport
Thursday, November 19th, 2009

roonieApparently last time Roonie G came to town he made a pretty big impression with the people at Starter’s Riverport. Tomorrow night he’s back at the Riverport for “One Night in Vegas”.

The party starts at 10PM and runs until 2AM. More details can be found at the Facebook event page, so if this type of thing interests you check it out!

OMG! Girl Talk at Lehigh tonight!
Thursday, November 19th, 2009

“Stop the presses!” is what I’d be yelling if people used presses anymore, I guess “stop the WordPress-es!” is more appropriate. Mash-up DJ extraordinaire Girl Talk is playing a show at Lehigh University tonight. If you’ve never heard Girl Talk before, you need to stop reading this post now, go to Girl Talk’s MySpace page, and check out some of his music. GT is probably one of the most inventive DJ’s out there today and his live shows are insane. I had the oppportunity to catch himin Philly last October at the Starlight Ballroom and had an awesome time. A Girl Talk show isn’t so much a concert as it is a dance party. girltalk djPeople get up on the stage and dance as if it were their own personal dance floor. It’s truly a one of a kind experience. Here are some photos from that show courtesy of Philebrity and photographer Dan Murphy.

The show is part of Lehigh’s Bonfire celebration for the upcoming Lehigh-Lafayette game this weekend. Now I’m not a Lehigh student, so that’s not exactly my first priority. But any event that brings Girl Talk to the Lehigh Valley is something worth checking out. According to the Lehigh Univeristy Productions page the Bonfire event starts at 8PM at their Goodman Campus and, best of all, the event is “free to all students and the community” . No word on when exactly Girl Talk takes the stage.

Now I know it’s raining out and by the time Girl Talk get’s started it’s probably gonna be pretty cold out but, if you’re not working, you’ve got no excuse not to go to the show tonight. Everyone needs to see Girl Talk at least once in their lives and if you haven’t seen him yet, tonight is the night.

Thursday – November 5, 2009 – Black & White Thursdays @ Roosevelt’s 21st
Thursday, October 29th, 2009

DJ Cyn and the people at Roosevelt’s 21st in Bethlehem are switching things up a little bit and updating their weekly Thursday night party. Starting Thursday November 5, Roosevelt’s will be hosting a weekly Black & White party featuring a Little Black Dress contest.

The Facebook event page doesn’t give any details on how the contest will be run. I guess theoretically the contest could be run like a classy version of a wet t-shirt contest with the winner being chosen by whoever the crowd drunkenly shouts the loudest for, but I doubt that’s how they’ll be doing it. Regardless, you ladies out there will want to send that dress to the cleaners because every night one lucky lady will be chosen to receive a $100 gift certificate to, where else, Roosevelt’s 21st.

While you’re there enjoy $1.99 Labatt Blue pints and $4 Rhino & vodka pints. Btw, anyone out there have any idea what Rhino is? There’s no cover charge, so that leaves you no reason not to go.

LV Eats – Bethlehem BrewWorks – Bethlehem, PA
Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

Bethlehem BrewWorks is not a new topic of discussion here on LV Scene, I’ve written about them before and will probably write about them again. More often than not, when I go to the BrewWorks I’m going there for a drink with friends, not for dinner. But this past weekend, myself and some friends from out of town decided to grab some dinner (and yes, drinks) at the locally famous brewpub.

Despite the fact that we showed up on a Saturday night without reservations and the dinner rush in full swing, me and my friends were seated immediately in a comfortable booth near the “fishbowl” section of the dining room. The BBW has a good number of tables and is able to accommodate lots of hungry people. Our service was courteous and quick, you’d never know we were in the middle of the dinner rush from the speed at which our entrees were brought out. The only wait that seemed longer than normal was for our dessert at the end of the meal.

For dinner, I had the 2500 Degree chicken sandwich, a delicious, yet spicy, take on the traditional buffalo chicken sandwich. The marinated chicken breast was grilled to perfection and topped with buffalo sauce, jalapeno peppers, pepper jack cheese and served on a fresh roll. For those of you who like their dinner with a little kick, I highly recommend this sandwich. But if heat isn’t your thing, there’s no need to worry. The BrewWorks has a full menu with a wide variety of burgers, steaks, salads, and pasta, I’m sure you’ll find something more your style.

A review of the BBW wouldn’t be complete without talking about their delicious brews. Bethlehem BrewWorks is known far and wide for their awesome, premise brewed beer. In my opinion, beer doesn’t get any better tasting then beer drank in the building it’s been brewed in. Don’t believe me? Order a draft from the BrewWorks and see for yourself. Saturday night I was able to enjoy the BrewWorks take on a traditional fall beer, the Oktoberfest. Not too hoppy but not too sweet, the Oktoberfest contains a subtle hint of caramel and not-s0-subtle hints of delciousness. You’re not going to find Yuengling Lager or Miller Lite at the BrewWorks, and that’s a good thing. Do yourself a favor and try whatever is in season at the Brewworks beer garden.

The BrewWorks has been been in business for over a decade, let’s hope they continue to serve Lehigh Valley diners for many more to come.

LV Eats – Black Forest Deli – Bethlehem, PA
Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

The Lehigh Valley is chock full of awesome corner delis, there’s almost too many places to get a great sandwich. Well, it’s time for you to add another place to that list of favorite sandwich shops. The Black Forest Deli in Bethlehem has been serving delicious sandwiches, wraps, and salads to their dedicated, almost cult like, customers for about 7 years now.

BFDWhile there this past Saturday, I tried a customer created sandwich called the “Tim Shady-wich”. The “Shady-wich” was piled high with fresh-sliced pastrami, roast beef, crispy bacon and smeared with a delicious horseradish spread. The sandwich was served with the BFD’s unique take on a deli classic…macaroni salad. Under normal circumstances I probably wouldn’t even mention something as commonplace as macaroni salad, but this was different. Very different, in a good way. It had a blend of seasonings that gave it a much needed kick and set it apart from any other mac salad I’ve ever had before.

With all the Wawas and Subways in the Lehigh Valley, it’s easy to have missed this Mother & Daughter owned/operated deli. But after reading this you no longer have a legitimate excuse to not check out the Black Forest Deli. So, what are you doing for lunch today? (Btw, the correct answer is, “going to the Black Forest Deli”).

Saturday – October 17, 2009 – Little Black Dress Party @ 40 Below
Saturday, October 17th, 2009

Looking for a high energy party for after the Lehigh Valley Brewfest this afternoon?? Look no further. 40 Below in Bethlehem has got you covered…but you better hope your little black dress isn’t at the cleaners.

The Little Black Dress Party starts tonight at 10PM and runs until they turn on the house lights. For all you youngsters out there looking to join in on the action, you’re in luck. Tonight’s event is 18 to party, 21 to drink. There’s no cover for anyone over 21 or anyone 18-20 who arrives before midnight. Also, anyone 21 and over gets a free drink pass if you show before it becomes Sunday. Drink specials tonight are as follows $2 Miller Lite Bottles, $3 Mixed Well Drinks, and a $4 Martini of the Night.

According to the Facebook event page, Starter’s Riveport is closed to the public tonight for a private function. If that’s true, it could mean big crowds at 40 Below. I feel obligated to point out there is no mention of this on the Starter’s Riverport Facebook page. So either this is some new clever/shady marketing tactic or Starter’s is actually hosting a private function.

So if girls are supposed to wear their little black dresses, what are guys supposed to wear? Little black tuxedo? Little black blazer? Little black man thong? Ewww. Too far.

OMG!! LV Scene Author to Host Weekly Trivia Night at The Firehouse!
Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

If you haven’t already guessed what this blog post is about, you might just wanna stop reading because a new trivia night is probably not something you’ll be interested in. But for those of you who have discerned what’s going on, I have a very big announcement for you. I’m excited to announce that starting in the near future, I will be hosting a Trivia night at The Firehouse!

Since opening in September, The Firehouse has been without a trivia night, opting to concentrate on their weekend events/parties. But now that they’ve got weekends under control, they’re going to be expanding their weekly offerings to include some new events…including a weekly trivia night.

Not all the details have been worked out just yet, and that’s where you come in. What would you like to see at this trivia night? Do you want more questions about pop culture? History? Sports? Would you like to see multi-question rounds? Or one question per round? Would you like to include pictures? Audio & video clips?

I want to make this trivia night the best in the Lehigh Valley and, with your help, I can do that. Leave your feedback in the comments section of this blog post or shoot me an email at…

Saturday – October 10, 2009 – New dance floor at Starter's Riverport
Saturday, October 10th, 2009

Starter’s Riverport has been one of the best places in the Lehigh Valley to party for some time now. They throw a lot of cool parties and draw a good crowd pretty much every weekend. But up until today they’ve not had a dedicated dance floor. For their themed events, such as Glow and Pulse, they’ve had to rent a temporary dance floor. But that’s all changed. I’m pleased to announce that Starter’s Riverport now has a brand new, permanent dance floor.

Tonight at Starter’s Riverport is manager Mo Taylor’s 30th birthday party. DJ Cap Cee will be in the mix, helping us break in that new dance floor. According to the Starter’s Riverport Facebook page there will be “drink specials all night”, but that’s as specific as they get. So come on out tonight to celebrate Mo getting a year older and the brand new dance floor.
