Food Review: Sangria Serves up Sophisticated Five-Star Fare
Monday, August 23rd, 2010

A first taste of Sangria, the region’s newest hotspot, turned up delectable five-star fare, a host of house sangrias on tap, chic metropolitan ambiance and highly trained staff, a plus in the Lehigh Valley, where often, sad to say, many servers aren’t privy to the fine menu of where they are employed.

Sangria is poised to bring Allentown’s fine dining culture back to the future with owner, Easton restaurateur George Meireles, adding fine Mediterranean to his successful collection of boutique restaurants in Easton.

Here, a few details from LV Scene’s taste test during a soft-opening Saturday.

The Look: Posh, sleek, yet friendly, Sangria’s modern interior is punctuated with designer lighting, warm hues, and roomy metropolitan bar. Dine inside or alfresco when the weather allows. Sangria is sure to alter one’s perspective of fine cuisine in the Queen City.

Appetizers: Don’t miss the Calamari Fries, large, tender calamari steak sliced and dipped in milk, batter and served with roasted tomato sauce and garlic basil aioli, sure to be voted the best of the Valley and beyond. Other winners are the Boneless Lamb Skewers with Roasted Garlic and Rosemary sauce over bed of potato straw, or Tuna Carpaccio, thin slices of seared tuna accompanied by watermelon and mint salsa.

The Sangrias: With four house recipes on “tap,” the sangria flows at Sangria. The traditional red  proved to please with just the right combo of red wine, and bouquet of refreshing fruit and wine flavors, while the Silver Sangria is brilliantly clear and tasty. Even the reluctant will find favor with the sangria here.

Salads: From the Mediterranean Seafood Salad, with octopus, bay scallops and shrimp tossed with bell pepper, Kalamata olives, fresh tomatoes, parsley and red wine vinaigrette to the Caesar Salad with Parmesan or Chopped Greek Salad with Lemon Oregano Vinaigrette, salads are a must in Mediterranean fare, and great to share with and pair with one of the flat breads.

The Entrees New take on traditional  Mediterranean favorites, from tasty seafood dishes, including traditional paella, to pastas, several savory lamb dishes, and beef made to order at table side, and a dose of poultry selections. Lamb chops were grilled to perfection with rosemary glaze, as was the pistachio crusted Tilapia. Exotic flat breads, including a daily special, are a must accompaniment.

The Service: Friendly attentive servers prove par excellence in knowledge of the Sangria dining and beverage menu.  By the taste and look of things, Sangria is bound to please, bringing fine dining traffic to downtown Allentown.

Saturday – March 20, 2010 – St. Patrick’s Day West End Pub Crawl
Thursday, March 18th, 2010

OMG, you guys! St. Patrick’s Day is almost here come and gone! I don’t know if it’s just me, but has every day this past year that wasn’t St. Patrick’s Day been a bit underwhelming? SPD is truly our nation’s greatest holiday.

And after a year of waiting, the St. Patrick’s Day West End pub crawl is finally here too! Last year’s West End pub crawl was easily the best night out I’ve had all year. I cannot recommend this pub crawl enough!

As you can see from the picture on the right, Allentown’s West End alliance has a bunch of cool events coming up. I suggest you take a look at their Facebook fan page for more information.

But these are just some of the upcoming events that will be going on in the Lehigh Valley. Because if there is one thing we know how to do right in the LV, it’s use a holiday as an excuse to get sloppy drunk. Stay tuned to LV Scene for more information about all the St. Patrick’s Day festivities throughout our area.

UPDATE: The West End pub crawl is this Saturday! If you haven’t already, make plans to participate in my favorite event all year. You do not want to miss this event! See you there!

Thursday – February 4, 2009 – Minus The Bear @ Croc Rock
Thursday, February 4th, 2010

Normally I don’t get too caught up in posting stuff about the music scene in the Lehigh Valley. The Lehigh Valley really doesn’t have much to offer as far as live musical entertainment goes. But every once in a while a respectable band will come through the Valley. Tonight for instance. At 7PM doors open at the Croc Rock as Minus the Bear takes the stage with Phantogram and Maps & Atlases. I know nothing about the two opening bands but I can tell you that Minus the Bear puts on an amazing show.

Chances are if you already like Minus the Bear you’re probably planning on going to the show tonight. But for those of you who may have never heard of them before and are looking for something to do tonight, come on out to the Croc Rock tonight and see what all the fuss is about.

LV Eats – Mangos Coastal Cuisine – Allentown, PA
Sunday, January 24th, 2010

Who doesn’t love Italian food? Or have a craving for Chinese every once in a while? We all do. But there comes a time when we need a change of scenery from all of that. Mangos Coastal Cuisine fulfills that change for me. Mangos is located across the street from Dorney Park in Allentown. It’s an establishment you wouldn’t expect to find so close to Dorney Park and Ice Cream World.

The design and decor of the restaurant was the first thing that caught my eye. Upon walking towards the entrance, it looks as if you’re walking into your own spanish hacienda. The wrought iron decor includes the extravagant chandeliers and wall sconces. These are perfectly placed throughout the dining area, bar, outside patio and the restrooms. The walls of the dining area have a rustic feel with a vibrant blue tile design. The bar area is separate from the dining room and is another option if there are no tables available. It’s designed as a half moon shape and has ample seating for those at happy hour and/or those who stopped by on a whim for a bite to eat.

Now, all this talk about restaurant decor is definitely important to the dining experience, but I know what you’re longing for at this moment. A refreshing mojito with just the right amount of mint, grilled chilean sea bass with brown butter mashed potatoes and a honey balsamic reduction, along with a beautifully lit dining room with great ambiance. Yes, it was fabulous. In addition to this meal, my party decided to order a few things to share. We ordered the baked lobster and crab with black bean queso dip, stuffed artichoke hearts, and lastly, the mesquite rubbed, grilled black angus porterhouse. The porterhouse came with smoked cheddar cheese mashed potatoes, bourbon demi glace and chipotle frizzled onions. The flavor didn’t disappoint to say the least. The mashed potatoes were mouth watering good! On the other hand, the stuffed artichokes (stuffed with cheddar, pepper jack and goat cheese with spicy herbed coulis) were not the typical choice for me, but I tried them. Not bad, but not something I would order on a regular basis. One of my favorites, the baked lobster and crab with black bean queso dip was a hit with my party. The dip comes with garlic whole grain crustines and tortilla chips. No other word, but delicious. To cap off the evening, I had the pineapple-infused martini. Now, If I could, I would order this any day of the week, but it’s only offered on select days.

The service at Mangos was good, the staff were knowledgeable of the menu and gave great recommendations. The menu has a glossary of items that you may have never heard of or eaten before which helps in the food selection process. We really enjoyed the environment and stayed for long after our meals were finished. The Mangos dining experience took me to the Mediterranean for the evening. All that was missing was the ocean view.

If you would like more information about Mangos, please visit their website at www.mangos-restaurant.com

Thursday – January 21, 2010 – Twisted Thursdays @ The PigPen
Thursday, January 21st, 2010

I’ll be straight up, I haven’t been to the PigPen in a while. It’s not the first place I think of when I’m looking to go out and party and, up until recently, they had a completely unnecessary cover charge. With most other bars out there not charging cover, it didn’t make any sense to go to the PigPen. But the cover charge is gone and, from what I’ve been hearing around town, things are really picking up at the PigPen. Trans/Event has taken over the weekly Thursday night party at the PigPen and it’s apparently going really well.

Twisted Thursday starts tonight at 8PM and is a 21+ event. Sorry to all you kids out there who aren’t 21 yet…you’re gonna have to sit this one out. The Facebook event page for Twisted Thursdays has all the information you need…but I’ll run through some of the important stuff. NO COVER, free laser light bowling and arcade games, $2 Bud Light & $3 SoCo shots from 10-12. It also looks like they’ve got a lot of entertainment lined up as well. “DJ Tommy Diz ‘Philly’, opening band Tim & Jules, Gogo dancers, fire performers & more!” (more…)
